According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, there are approximately 18,000 practicing ophthalmologists in the United States. It is also estimated that there are over 32,000 optometry practices in the United States with more than 165,000 employees in total. The number of unique ophthalmology practices has been declining due to industry consolidation, with a recent study citing less than 6,000 practices in the United States, down from more than 7,000 in 2015. A similar study revealed that at least 89 optometry practices were acquired by private equity-backed platforms from October 2019 to October 2021.
Nearly 75 percent of adults in the U.S. rely on corrective eyewear, prompting annual eye exams; replacement lenses, frames, or contacts; and occasional therapeutic eye care services. A considerable portion of the population also experiences conditions that necessitate advanced care beyond what optometrists can provide, such as surgical interventions for age-related eye diseases like cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. The industry is expected to experience continued growth due to an aging population, rising incomes, and an increasing awareness of eye health. – Report “Eye Care Outlook Healthcare Industry Update – 2024” by Daniel Levin and Nick j.
